If the employees of a company are the heart and soul of an organization, then the network is the lifeline. A well designed network provides your employees with access to the data needed for maintaining company financials, aiding in customer service and keeping your sales force at its selling best.

Unfortunately, many companies take a passive approach to networking. Case in point, we recently had a client who needed a network switch. So, he went to a local electronics store and picked one up. Several months passed and issues, which arose as a direct result of the budget network switch, started occurring at various times throughout the day. One issue was that every user across six locations kept getting knocked off the network. That's a pretty big "one little" issue! Since the quick fix didn't work as a solution, no money was saved.

The lesson here is, don't shortcut your network solutions. It's just not worth the risk of losing a sale or upsetting a long term client because you think you can get a product cheaply at an electronics store (or because you know a guy who can stop in after work and "fix" a network problem-another common "oh, groan!" moment for those of us in the IT profession).
