If the employees of a company are the heart and soul of an organization, then the network is the lifeline. A well-designed network provides your employees with access to the data needed for maintaining company financials, aiding in customer service, and keeping your sales force at its selling best.
Unfortunately, many companies take a passive approach to networking. Case in point, we recently had a
prospect who needed a new
firewall. They waited months and months. Eventually, the
firewall reached end-of-life and was no longer supported by the
manufacturer. One day, the firewall died; the day before he was going
on vacation. So, in a panic he calls us and wants a quote for a new
one. Before we had a chance to send it to him he was running out the
door to pick one up he bought on Craigslist. Two Days later while he was
on vacation guess what happened? The used firewall off of Craigslist broke.
How irresponsible is this? This small business is shut down while this
guy is on the beach.
The lesson here is, don't shortcut your network solutions. It's just not worth the risk of losing a sale or upsetting a long-term client because you think you can get a product cheaply at an electronics store (or because you know a guy who can stop in after work and "fix" a network problem,
another common "oh, groan!" moment for those of us in the IT profession).
