Data Leak Prevention - DLP
So what is Data Loss Prevention (DLP)? Simply put DLP is watching what information leaves a company. Most people watch what is trying to get into the business. But rarely do people watch what is leaving.
Think about your company and the information on your company computers for a second. Employee records, medical information, customer lists, credit card numbers, payroll information, etc. The list goes on and on. Would you want your competitor to see your client database? Do you manufacture products that you don't want to be duplicated by someone else? Would you want employees to see sensitive financial documents?
This can be a delicate subject. Often this comes with the stigma that we imply employees are stealing information. That is some of it and it does happen, more than you want to know. But it isn't everything. Sometime it is malicious software, called malware, that gets on company computers and it mines for information. Maybe this malware is set to sniff out credit card numbers.
One example of the risk businesses have is this. Do you know that if credit card data is leaked from your computers the business may be responsible for paying for the cleanup for every credit card that has passed through it? Translation, the business owner will have to pay for this directly.
